Photograph of a Burmese man, Burma (Myanmar), taken by Philip Adolphe Klier in the 1890s. In this full-length studio portrait the man is shown posed with hand on hip holding a cigar in his left hand, against a painted backdrop of a woodland scene. He wears a turban, a fur-lined jacket, and the man’s lower garment known as a silk pahso. During the Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885), fine fabrics such as silk and garments such as the jacket were reserved for court officials by sumptuary laws. After the fall of the Burmese monarchy they were worn by the wealthy.
